Funeral professionals provide great compassion to families who have experienced loss. Still, many are uncertain how to handle the unique dynamics surrounding families who have lost loved ones to violent crimes. This session is intended to help you understand the program offered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Attorney General's Victim Compensation and Assistance Division and how you can provide vital information that will enhance your services and assist survivors in receiving compensation through the program.
The session will cover changes to the program brought about by criminal justice reform laws in the Commonwealth.
This session will review the updates to the following:
- Information regarding how Victim Compensation can assist homicide survivors with the payment of funeral services
- The Funeral Home's role in the Victim Compensation process
- Information regarding the benefits of the homicide policy change that created a streamlined process that allows Victim Compensation to pay for funeral services more quickly
- Victim Compensation Homicide Fact Sheet: a helpful tool for funeral homes and grieving families that summarizes the Victim Compensation process
This session will give funeral directors direction on how to handle each of the challenges associated with a death resulting from a violent crime.
The session will be presented by Krystal Rohloff, Senior Investigator/ Advocate, and Manager of the Homicide Program at the Victim Compensation program. Also available for questions and to address concerns will be John Malone, Deputy Director, Victim Compensation and Assistance Division.
